SLEEP: Get Into Healthy Habits
Sleep is something that while essential, is often an afterthought for many people, especially in America.
Late nights, long work days, stress, getting up early to workout, or barely getting up in time to get to work! Sleep schedules in our country are all over the map for a variety of both personal, and cultural, reasons.
Getting into better and healthier sleep habits can feel difficult, nearly impossible, or, dare I say, tiring!
With life and schedules all over the map, sometimes it can be difficult to stick to a proper bed time and wakeup time without feeling like a total buzzkill, or like an 8 year old. I often see people joke “wow I really am getting old, I am in bed by 9:30pm!”. In my mind, I don’t see this as “old” I see this as behavior that will keep you younger and healthier for a long long time!
Before we dig into building better sleep habits, let’s discuss what sleep really does for your body, and why you should ALWAYS prioritize it, no matter how old you are.
1.) It keeps your immune system highly functional
2.) It helps your skin look brighter, and more full of life
3.) It helps your brain recover and think clearly
4.) It balances your mood & can help you feel more positive
5.) Sleep can help with weight management + hormone balance
Sleep is a critical ingredient to all life functions, particularly health and well being.
I always try and get a really good 8 hours of sleep. I use my iPhone to set a reminder of when I need to start getting ready to go to bed based on the time I need to wake up in the morning. Most alarm apps have an option to set a reminder and wake up times!
I find I need to plan a good 30 minutes to really get ready for bed. I have a full night time routine to make sure I get the most optimal sleep possible, so I can feel fueled and ready for a full work day, workout, training session, and any studying I may have!
Being mentally and physically focused is important, and it’s really hard to without good sleep.
Other ways I make sure I sleep well:
1.) I always use a humidifier! I love mine and its great for your skin and is relaxing with essential oils.
2.) FRESH clean sheets regularly
3.) I wash my face, brush my teeth, and take time for any self care
4.) If I have time, I put my phone down, read a calming book, or journal before turning in!
What are your favorite ways of winding down and getting a good nights sleep?
